Welcome to the Algonquin Reads website! This all started in 2009, when one of the Library and Information Technician program's teachers, Helena Merriam, was inspired by other literacy campaigns and felt that Algonquin College should do its part to raise literacy awareness. The campaign is all about promoting literacy through lots of fun events and activities to help bring reading into more lives.
Studies have shown that fewer and fewer people can read and many who know how to read don't for a variety of reasons. Reading makes a huge difference in a person's life because the more a person reads, the better the tools they will have to live the life they want. Some fascinating studies have been done by Community Literacy of Ontario and Ontario Literacy Coalition
Please have a look around the Algonquin Reads website! There is a lot to look at including some upcoming events, some suggested reading lists, and some information on how you too can get involved! Don't forget to check out our Blog and participate in our book chat!
November 24th, Algonquin's Woodroffe Campus was invaded by silent prophets reading Anthemn of a Reluctant Prophet. The event was to raise awareness of the book and the initiative. Our own Yvonne Coutts-Martignago organized and ran this amazing event.
The used book sale was a huge success! Thank you to everyone who came out and bought books! A special thank you to the firefighter students (pictured) for their help setting up on both days.
